Daily Routine

A Typical Day in the Nursery

A day at our Nursery provides an understandable and regular routine that supports your child’s learning. We provide a mixture of group activities (story-time/singing/discussions), café snack time and individual activities, and it is a sensitive mix of both staff-planned experiences and child-initiated free-play.

Here is an example of our daily routine. Timings for Nursery morning, lunch and afternoon openings will always stay the same, but we like to be flexible with other timings to suit the children’s needs or special events/activities that we have planned.

Morning 8.45 - 11.45

8.45: One of us welcomes you and your child at the Nursery entrance. Children hang outdoor clothes and lunch box on their peg, put their photo on the register board and find an activity with you.

9.10: Children sit in our Meeting Area together, say good morning and listen to a story or sing a welcome song.

9.25: Some children may be chosen to work with an adult on a maths or literacy activity. The other children have a free-flow choice of activities. The door to our back garden is open for children to come in and out as they want to.

10.00: In small groups, children join an adult for Café time, which is a drink, snack and a chat! This happens during the free-flow activities. Children are asked to come to the café, and then return to their play.

10.40: It’s Tidy Up Time.

10.45: We all go outside to the Nursery garden for some outdoor play.

11.30: Singing/Story time.

11.45: We open the Nursery doors and if your child is staying for the morning session only, we will call your child while you wait in the Nursery garden. Children stay with the group in our Meeting Area until an adult collects them.

Lunch 11.45 - 12.30

11.45: It’s time to wash hands for Lunch time for those who are staying for lunch. Children sit at our table to eat their packed lunch, then go outside to the Nursery garden for more outdoor play with their friends once they have finished eating.

Afternoon 12.45 - 3.15

12.45: Children joining us for the afternoon session hang outdoor clothes on their peg and we all sit together in our Meeting Area. We say good afternoon to each other and listen to a story.

12.50: Some children may be chosen to work with an adult on a maths or literacy activity. These activities are rotated so that children staying all day will have a different activity from their morning one. The other children have a free-flow choice of activities. The door to our back garden is open for children to come in and out as they want to.

2.00: We tidy up together and wash our hands for the afternoon Café.

2.15: Children sit at our Café tables for an afternoon drink and snack. The snack is different to the morning one, to provide variety for children who stay for the whole day.

2.30: We all go outside to the Nursery garden for more outdoor play.

3.00: Singing/Story time.

3.15: We open the Nursery doors and call your child while you wait in the Nursery garden. Children stay with the group in our Meeting Area until an adult collects them.
