Weekly Roundup – Junior School
This week we have been putting our school values in action through our learning. Mrs Offler, Mrs Lewis and I were lucky enough to spend time in all of the classrooms on Tuesday. We saw Maths and English learning. We were especially interested to see how ‘spot check’ is used in Maths, and find out more about the creative writing we have been doing across the school.
Joe in Year 5 told us, “When we use the spot check, you have to check where you have made an error. It is not always at the end and you may have got some parts of the calculation correct.”
Zuzu showed us an example of a calculation, and explained how you would check it systematically. She explained to Mrs Lewis, “In a column addition for example, you would start checking with the ones, and then the tens.” She went on to explain that once you had found your error, you could then correct it.
Hannah told us, “Spot check is helpful. It tells you how you’re doing.”
We love a challenge at the Juniors, and Year 6 showed us how they would tackle complex number problems systematically. We were so impressed that the children were not phased by the challenge, and showed great enthusiasm and resilience in solving this. Lots of dojos all round! Find out more about our values which we earn dojos for demonstrating here.
We saw some fantastic writing about Ottoline and the Yellow Cat in Year 3, and beautiful descriptive imagery in Year 4 in their sculpture poems.
Most of all, we were most impressed by the children’s behaviour and learning culture around the school. Children were actively engaged in their learning from the minute their lessons began, and their enthusiasm for learning was so lovely to see. Well done everyone!
