  • Safety Advice for families

    Fri 24 Feb 2017
Public Health Department are encouraging families to follow this advice with food brought into schools through snack and packed lunches.

Doctors have issued a stark warning that young children can choke to death on whole grapes, following the recent tragedy of a young boy who choked whilst eating grapes at an after-school club. Despite first aid, the grape could not be dislodged and the child had a heart attack and tragically died.

Why are some foods so dangerous?
The size and shape of grapes & cherry/plum tomatoes means they can completely plug a child’s airway. The tight seal produced by the foods smooth surface makes them difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to choking on grapes/ tomatoes because:

    • Their swallow reflex is still developing.
    • Their airway is very small.
    • They don’t have a full set of teeth and are still learning to chew properly.

We advise that grapes and tomatoes are cut in half lengthways and ideally in quarters.
  • In school and ready to learn

    Thu 23 Feb 2017

Term 1 to Term 3 whole school attendance was

    96%

Well done families and children that attend school everyday. We are currently hitting our school target.

As part of the school's development plan and our drive to ensure children are at school, on time and ready to learn we have been focusing on address persistent lateness and poor attendance.

More about this approach can be found here.

A massive well done to the families that have responded to school support and made improvements to attendance and/or punctuality.

Analysis of mid-year attendance and punctuality has been completed and letters will be sent shortly.

We are pleased to see a significant reduction in the number of children arriving late with a third less than in September, meaning more children in class on time and learning!

Please contact Mrs Eve (Inclusion Lead) if you want any support with ensuring good attendance and punctuality.

  • Success!

    Mon 20 Feb 2017

Ask your children about the key ingredients for success.

In assembly we discussed the importance of embracing failure and learning from it. We also discussed how important practice and hard work can be.

During the next few weeks we will continue to look at how hard work, determination and resilience leads to success. Including some 'famous failures' and how failing made them successful!

Mr Beament will be looking for children that demonstrate these skills to help out with his assemblies.
