  • Weekly roundup Junior

    Fri 26 May 2023

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly Roundup - Junior School

The sun has been shining this week and it’s been great!

    Oracy learning walk:

On Monday, Faye, our Assistant Director of Education from the Trust, visited the Infant and Junior Schools. She spent time with Sophie, Mrs Simpkins, Amy McNaughton (Co-Chair of Governors), Mr Beament and myself looking at lots of things across the schools, but mostly focussing on Oracy. We saw some fantastic oracy activities taking place, from spotting the odd one out and explaining why in Reception, to debating ‘Is it possible to remember everyone who fought in the war?’ in Year 6. We saw specific talking techniques the children have been learning about, such as ‘talk tactics’ and use of the ‘concept cartoons.’ The children will be able to explain to you what these are.

We were very proud of all of the children, and it is great to hear from them that they think the Oracy project is really helping them with their learning. Charlotte said, “We hear from more people in the class now,” and Laurie said, “It helps you to change your opinion and realise you are not right with everything.”

    Visit to Oriel Lodge:

Year 3 and 4 have been continuing their visits to Oriel Lodge this week, and had a lovely time playing games, making puzzles and doing drawing. The residents have been enjoying our visits – they welcomed us in and waved us off when we left. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported with these visits.

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly roundup – Infants

    Reception assembly

What an amazing Reception assembly we had this morning! The children shared their learning with confidence, and this included speaking into the microphone in front of the large audience. They sang their songs beautifully with actions and all the older children and grownups were super proud of them.

    Farleigh Hungerford

Year 1 and 2 enjoyed their visits to Farleigh Hungerford Castle. The sun shone on both days and the children learnt lot of facts about the Lady Tower, Lord and Lady Hungerford and what life was like living in the castle. Click here and here.  A member of the public who was visiting said that she thought our children were the best behaved children she had ever experienced on a school trip! Well done everyone! Spreading the Caring Code far and wide.

    Green Day

Today has also been Green Day and the children have written their sustainability pledges.

I promise to recycle litter and I promise to turn off the taps – Tommy

I promise to recycle glass, metal and cardboard – Estella

We value all our Governors who do an amazing job of supporting the St Saviours schools. Thank you to Wendy who has written this terms message from the Governors. Click here to read her message.

  • A message from our governor Wendy Jupp

    Fri 26 May 2023

My name is Wendy and as part of my role with the local governing committee I chair the standards committee.  This is where a smaller group of governors meet with Mr Beament, Mrs Simmons and Sophie taking the opportunity to look at standards across the schools in more detail than we can during the termly governors meetings.

We look at a range of resources to ensure that the school is making good progress towards the goals set out for the school year and that this progress is reflected in the achievements of the children.

The committee looks at progress data for groups of children, such as year groups and those with special educational needs, comparing this with data from the trust.  The committee asks questions to ensure that additional support is provided by the school where required.

We look at the reports by trust representatives who have spent time in school.  In these we often find examples of the schools development plan in action.  We have seen good practice that the teachers have told governors about in our subject link meetings captured in the trust reports.

We look at examples of children’s work in their books.  Governors are involved in the planning and leadership of the schools.  This is where we see those plans coming to life and how they have had an impact on learning.

Next year the committee will go into classrooms during the school day.  This is an opportunity for governors to see things that we discuss in meetings, such as the oracy guidelines, taking place.

  • Year 2 Farleigh Castle

    Wed 24 May 2023

Year 2 had a great time at Farleigh Castle on Tuesday.

  • Infant weekly roundup

    Tue 23 May 2023

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly roundup - Infants

Next week is a very busy week! It starts on the Monday with a visit from Faye our very supportive school improvement person. She’s coming to spend the day looking at how our Voice 21 project on oracy is helping our children from Nursery to year 6 talk about their learning, share their thoughts and express their feelings. We will be creating a little video clip next term to share more information about this project with you. Japan class have thought about what the project has meant to them so far.

Sophie said, ‘I am good at thinking about body language and using a clear voice when I speak.’

Heidi said, ‘I am good at one voice at a time. We take turns to talk and listen, indicating when we want to talk.’

    Farleigh Castle

On Tuesday Year 2 are off to Farleigh Castle and on Thursday it’s the Year 1’s turn. We’re excited about going, here’s what we are looking forward to most.

Jennifer said, ‘I’m looking forward to asking are dragons real and do they all have wings?’

Freddie said, ‘I’m looking forward to having a picnic and also seeing the arrow slits.’

Olive said, ‘I’m looking forward to seeing what a castle looks like. I’ve not been to one before.’

Evelyn said, ‘I’m looking forward to looking out the window and seeing nature. I know there’s a ditch but not a moat.’

    Seedling swap

After school Wednesday/ Thursday and Friday seedlings will be outside the front of the school. Please come and take a plant and donate some of your own if you wish.

    Friday

Friday is Green day and it’s also Reception classes assembly. On this day all the children are invited to come into school in their own clothes wearing something green (even Reception). Please don’t worry, the green token can be big or small - head to toe in green, or green socks, or a green hairband/green on a t-shirt etc. If you don’t own anything green, again do not worry, maybe your child could make a green ‘badge’ to attach to their clothes. If your child doesn’t like coming to school in their own clothes and wishes to wear their school uniform that day then that is fine also!

    Thank you

Just want to say a huge thank you to all the parent and carers who have volunteered to come on the trips next week, who have or are helping with the Junior school spring clean and who help with Popcorn Friday and other FOSS events. Your support makes such a difference to our school community.

    Vacancy

We have an advert out for Nursery Lead 23 hours a week please see website for details.

We hope you have a great weekend.

    Best wishes,

    Sophie

  • Weekly roundup Juniors

    Fri 12 May 2023

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly Roundup - Junior School

It’s been lovely to see the sunshine today after what has been a rather rainy week!

    Well done Year 6

Year 6 have been working hard this week on their SATS tests, and I wanted to take the opportunity to say how proud we are of all of the children. They have approached the tests with enthusiasm and resilience, have showed up every day and given every day their best efforts. It has been so lovely to see children thoughtfully tackling questions, not worrying if they didn’t know the answers to some of the questions and confidently carrying on with the paper. Resilience in action!

A huge thank you to the parents and governors who have given up their time to help supervise the test. Thank you to all of the Infant and Junior school staff who have supported with the tests, and a huge thank you to breakfast club for sorting everyone out with such delicious breakfasts every day! Breakfast club has run like a café this week (Mrs Offler and Miss Markwell have joined Mrs Forleo and her usual team, and have been showing off their pancake cooking and toast making skills!) Breakfast club have certainly given everyone a great start to the day. For pictures of Year 6 celebrating the end of SATs at the park, click here.
