  • Weekly Roundup Juniors

    Fri 23 Feb 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly Roundup - Junior School

We’ve started the term really well.

    OPAL:

Miss Markwell, Mrs Eachus and the OPAL team have been continuing to work hard to make sure our playtimes are great! The OPAL team made bird feeders this week which are dotted around the site to encourage some feathered visitors! To see pictures, click here.

    Request for your help:

We are looking for small items for our things for our Imagination/small world garden and the bus. These could include small world toys, books, natural materials (pine cones, acorns etc), dress up clothes…  We would be very grateful for anything that you think we would enjoy!

Please drop these items at reception.

    Year 5 Extended Homework Projects:

Year 5 were set an extended Homework project to research an aspect of their Viking topic and produce a project that they could present to the class. The creative ideas and thought that has gone into their projects has blown Mr Carter and Miss Drake away and it has been wonderful hearing how the children got on and what they learnt when they shared their work with their class! Click here to see pictures of these.

  • Weekly Roundup Infants

    Fri 23 Feb 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    Weekly roundup  - Infants

    Welcome back

I hope that you all had a good rest over half term and it’s been great to welcome everyone back. It’s been a wet and windy start to Term 4! With this in mind, we do try to get outside whatever the weather so please make sure your child has a warm waterproof coat with a hood and a pair of named wellies in school. We do have some coats on our clothes rail by the main office and some spare wellies in school, so please let us know if we can help in any way.

    Science Competition

Over the Christmas holidays, Louise set a challenge of completing a science experiment. We are pleased to announce that the winners are brother and sister Evie and Barney. They chose the rocket experiment.

Barney said, ‘We bought the rocket then we had to fill it with water. We put it on the launcher with 3 big bottles. It was hard work pumping the rocket. I really enjoyed pulling the string and making it launch.’

Evie said, ‘It was my idea to do the rocket experiment. You must only put half a cup of water in otherwise the bottle will break and it will explode. It surprised me that it went so high and so far that it got stuck in the tree. I had to climb the tree to get it back down.’

Well done to Evie and Barney and well done to all the other scientists who took part. We were really impressed with all the experiments. They all looked lots of fun!

    Open the Book

On Tuesday, we welcomed volunteers from St Saviours Church to lead an Open the Book assembly for Years 1 and 2. They shared the parable of ‘The picnic on the hill.’

Molly said, ‘The story told us about Jesus and how he shared 5 loaves and 3 fishes between 5000 people. He asked God to make lots. The message is if we all come together and share, we can feed everyone.’

  • A message from our Governor Lucy Powell

    Fri 09 Feb 2024

    Governors Newsletter

    9 February 2024

Happy Half Term to all 😊

For this newsletter we wanted to share some of the great wellbeing experiences the children and teachers have had this past week, as we explored ways to support positive mental health. Reception were read the Colour Monster by some of the Governors and reception parents whilst Year 1 and 2 did a rotation between sports activities and an arts afternoon. There was a mixture of tag rugby, hockey, gym in the hall, yoga and tennis. These sessions were all led by parents and external sports providers, supported by school staff and thank you so much to everyone for your time! We made sure we considered how to look after our bodies, warming up our muscles and cardio-vascular system, working as a team and developing our co-ordination skills. It was great to see everyone having a go! The Infants also had a visit from a dietitian to think and learn about how to fuel our bodies and understand how the body works to keep it healthy. They learnt some great breathing methods and how to keep our tummies happy.

The Juniors were inspired this week by some parents who came into talk about wellness and their jobs. Year 3/4 had a visit from an Osteopath, Physiotherapist and Nutritionist. They learnt about their joints, muscles and bones and how to look after them through exercise and good food. They were introduced to belly breathing and discussed the importance of a balanced diet. Years 5/6 got a wonderfully interactive lesson learning about sensory processing and what they can do to help regulate their systems if they feel overwhelmed. They learnt about the 3 lesser known senses - the vestibular, proprioceptive and interoceptive systems and some yoga moves.

Well done and thank you to Sara Hibbs on pulling together a great week.

As you may be aware, both schools currently hold the platinum award for OPAL and the Juniors school are looking to go for re-accreditation this year. This includes continuing our subscription to Scrapstore, which gives the children access to new equipment throughout the year for playtime.

As Governors, we have been working alongside the school to ensure there are extra curriculum opportunities for sport through afterschool clubs, and access to specialists coaches. Superpirates provide an enthusiastic and active afterschool provision and also support lunch time play at the Infants. I joined the Governors team in September last year. I have taken on a Foundation role which links me with the church, and my role has been focused on Personal and OPAL (outdoor play and learning). This includes PSHE, PE and outdoor learning which are areas I am really passionate about.

It is always good to get your feedback and It would be great to hear your views around sports provision at St Saviours. Please look out for the parents and carers voice questionnaire coming soon.

  • Lovely wellbeing week activities at the Juniors

    Fri 09 Feb 2024

We had a fantastic wellbeing themed day at the Juniors yesterday.

Years 3/4 heard from 3 parents:

Lucy Jones is an Osteopath who taught us that we have 206 bones in our bodies and 600 muscles. She taught them about joints, muscles and bones and how to look after them through exercise and good food. They even got to see a model of a spine.

Lynsey Keyes is a physiotherapist who taught them about the importance of "belly breathing" to help with self regulation and getting us to a more restful state if we feel stress. They got to practice this which was a lovely calming exercise.

Gemma Besant is a Nutritionist who talked about the importance of a balanced diet - they learnt about the eat well plate and trying to eat at least 5 fruit or vegetables a day and 6-8 glasses of water. She encouraged everyone to try a new fruit or vegetable at the weekend! We are so sorry there are no pictures of this - we had such a lovely time we forgot to take any.

And with thanks to Beth Camprubi and Rosie Frost for their classroom support too!

Years 5/6 got a wonderfully interactive lesson from Zoe Deselincourt who taught the kids about sensory processing and what the can do to help regulate their systems if they feel overwhelm. They learnt about the 3 lesser known senses - the vestibular, proprioceptive and interoceptive systems, some simple yoga moves and they also got to play with cloud dough! You can see pictures of this on the Y6 class pages.

Thank you so much for your time parents - the children really enjoyed learning from you!

And a massive thanks to Rachel Gasson for the Yoga sessions she ran for teachers, wellness talk from Becky Hughesman and breakfast organised by Lucy Powell and supported by Robyn Seddon and Ma Cuisine also. Final thanks to Sara Hibbs for co-ordinating the week - it has been a huge success.

They also designed class banners promoting and considering wellbeing.

  • What Love means for us

    Fri 09 Feb 2024

On Wednesday afternoon three parent volunteers came into school to help us with an art and craft afternoon. We explored what love feels like for us. Ivy said, 'At bedtime my daddy rubs my feet and reads me a story.'

Toby said, 'I feel love when I'm with my family.'
