  • Weekly roundup– Infant School

    Fri 21 Jan 2022

The sun has continued to grace us this week and it has been wonderful seeing the children's faces as they arrive each morning to find a frost covered playground and icy places where water has collected. A frost always provides a rich opportunity for awe and wonder for our young children and it's been wonderful hearing their gasps, exclamations of Look!  And explanations about what they can see.

‘The leaf’s got fir around the edge.’ Lilly

‘The cold has made the ice.’ Evie

Children in the Nursery have had lots of fun both inside and outside this week and we’ve welcomed some new friends this week too.

Maria, Grayson and Archie were deep in their play playing their game of tiger, fire engine and marble, working together to navigate their marble around the nursery.

Murphy had such concentration on his face as he organised the coloured magnetic shapes into different patterns, counting and naming colours.

Ivy, Emmy and Sylvie role played looking after a sick person. They tucked each other up, gave them food and drinks and said kind gentle words to the person who was sick. Caring Code Champions in the making!

Our Nursery is an exciting place to be and I love the time I spend there each week. It is growing and thriving and we are looking for an Early Years Practitioner to join our experienced team. You can find details here. Please contact the school if you would like to look around.

Reception have been busy exploring their Discovery plan of ‘At the Museum’ and I was lucky enough to be given a tour of their very own museum. Agnes and Aoife asked me to pay 4 pennies which they counted and put into their till. I was given a ticket and taken on a tour. I was shown a variety of different dinosaurs, and the children explained how to use a magnifying glass to look closely at the fossils. There was a photograph hanging up and Daisy informed me that it was an x-ray.

You can find out more about my visit to the Reception museum here

You can find lots more pictures of learning in Reception here

We are loving welcoming children from the wider community for our Stay and Play sessions. Our next session is Tuesday 1st March 9:30 – 10:30, this is a change to the original date. We will be pond dipping in Pauls Garden. Please do come and join us. The link to all the dates is here

We continue our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) journey this term, the children have been enjoying the play experiences on the Infant playground and working with the Scrapstore in Bristol have refreshed the Infant Play Pod, filling it with new and exciting loose parts for play.  Find out more here.

  • Weekly Roundup – Junior School

    Fri 21 Jan 2022

This week we have been thinking about ‘aspiration’ and ‘inspiration’ – setting challenging goals, and being inspired to do so by others. We talked about some of the people we find inspiring in assembly on Monday – you can find out more here. One of the Year 3 children found examples of aspiration and resilience in their reading book and I loved hearing about this on Tuesday. You can find out more here.

We have also been thinking about improving our Maths skills, and celebrating these as we get better! Louise at the Infants found a really good app that you may like to use to practice basic number skills. You can find out about it here. Also, we are going to be celebrating our excellent mathematicians with a ‘Rockstar of the week’ award, starting next Friday. Children will get to enjoy some exciting props which arrived this week as they celebrate their successes- you can see their first outing here.

Finally, we have been celebrating how we can all help and support each other to learn. Please click here to find more information on being a Dyslexic Learner and to see quotes from children that show the impact of the learning we are doing in this area. This article was also published in the ‘Bath and Wiltshire Parent’ this week, you can read it here.

  • Are you ready to rock!?

    Fri 21 Jan 2022

The Juniors are working hard practicing their times tables using TTRockstars, and to celebrate the hard work and effort that is going into this, we will be sharing 'rockstars of the week' during Friday assembly.

These could be children who have spent the most time practicing on TTRockstars, have been recommended by their teachers for working hard on their tables that week, children who have earnt the most coins on TTRockstars or children who are all round times table superstars!

Who will be our rockstars next week? Keep practicing and it could be you!

  • The Dinosaur Museum

    Fri 21 Jan 2022

This week Reception children enjoyed showing Sophie around the dinosaur museum. The children have been selling tickets, sorting dinosaurs,  learning dinosaur facts and making gift bags.

We also have a post box where children write and send postcards from the museum to each other.

This week we were very excited to get a letter from Andy from 'Andy's dinosaur adventures'. He also sent us some dinosaur eggs to look after! We have been writing about the eggs and imagining what might be inside.

  • OPAL Play

    Fri 21 Jan 2022

At St Saviour’s we love play – messy play, risky play, creative play, water play. You name it we enjoy it!

Children spend 20% of their school week on the playground during break times and lunchtime. We recognise the need to make this time purposeful and fun for our children. The Junior School are a ‘Platinum OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) School’, this is the highest available award for play, and the Infant School are currently working towards the same award.

This week, the children have been enjoying the play experiences on the Infant playground and working with the Scrapstore in Bristol have refreshed the Infant Play Pod, filling it with new and exciting loose parts for play.

Check out the fun in the photos below…

  • Stay and Play Sessions

    Thu 20 Jan 2022

Below is a reminder of our upcoming 'stay and play' sessions for Reception 2022 children and prospective Nursery children.

We have had to reorganise one session, changing the date and time - marked in 'red' on the poster below. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Can't wait to see you there!

  • Non stop fun and learning in Reception

    Thu 20 Jan 2022

The start of this term has been packed full of fun, learning, resilience and new experiences for our Reception children.

The children have been exploring and learning about dinosaurs (always a favourite for Reception children), using resources to count and solve maths challenges, enjoying books with the class and their friends and lots of smiles!

  • 1 minute maths

    Wed 19 Jan 2022

At both St Saviour's schools we access and use White Rose Maths to support our approach to maths teaching.

White Rose have just launched their new 1-Minute Maths app that helps children to build greater number confidence and fluency. It’s all about targeted practice in engaging, one-minute chunks!

It's brand new and currently aimed at younger children in Key Stage 1 but would also be good for Junior School children that want to revisit some maths concepts and race against the 1 minute clock.

The app is free and can be downloaded from here from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Give it a try... we think it is fun, quick and reinforces key concepts we teach in school.

  • A story with our Junior School values

    Tue 18 Jan 2022

Today, a Junior School pupil shared some examples of our school values 'aspiration' and 'resilience' that she found in the book she is reading, 'How to Train your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell.

She said that there was aspiration because one of the characters was looking up to another character, and resilience because the first plan to defeat the sea dragon giganticus maximus didn't work, so the characters had to try another plan. It's such a good book - we had a laugh at some of the funny parts too 🙂

Thank you for sharing this - we loved hearing about what you found and sharing it with the St Saviour's community.

  • Aspirations

    Mon 17 Jan 2022

This week, the Junior School are continuing to focus on the termly theme of Aspiration in assembly.

During our online assembly this morning, Hannah in Year 5 told us that aspiration can be when you are working towards a goal that you have been inspired to achieve by someone else. We shared ideas about who inspires us.

Eilidh said, "We have been learning about newspapers in Year 4, and I was inspired by a girl who climbed 50 mountains in 24 hours."

Joe in Year 5 said, "I have been inspired to get into football by Cristinao Ronaldo. When things go wrong for him, he keeps going, and this has inspired me to have a go at football."

Ursula in Year 3 said, "My Granny is an author and she inspires me to write."

We thought about David Attenborough, and how he inspires people to take care of the planet (and has done for many years). We then looked at the book, "Greta and the Giants", which is inspired by Greta Thunberg's stand to save the world. We learnt about how she, as one person, inspired lots of people to respectfully explain how they feel changes need to be made to protect the planet through peaceful protest, and is making her views heard across the world.
